Classroom Policies
Homework: Homework will be assigned nightly Monday through Thursday. The average amount of time students should spend on their homework is an hour. This includes studying. Science homework is not usually assigned, aside from the occasional “catch-up” on class projects or bring in materials for a project. Math homework is assigned every night, with a few exceptions. Needless to say, your fifth grader will MOST LIKELY have math homework and reading to do on a nightly basis. Homework is meant to be an opportunity to practice what was learned in class recently or to review what was learned in the past. Students should ALWAYS bring home their math binder containing notes and examples completed in class. This year, my two classes will be piloting a new math program titled EnVisions. It is the same program the sixth grade has changed to this year. The students will have a text book at school (I am unsure at this time if they will be allowed to take them home). If homework becomes an ordeal, please don’t hesitate to contact me by email or a quick note written on the assignment- I do not want homework to be stressful for the students or the parents. Homework is NOT averaged into the grade, but is tracked for effort grades and rewards.
Tests: Notification of topic tests will be written in assignment books approximately one week prior to the test. Students will be told in class what material to study for each topic test. Weekly tests occur in math as a review of basic/necessary skills (tests will be Fridays). Daily quick checks will be given to insure understanding of the concepts being taught.
Weekly Communication: You will receive weekly communication from us containing a brief summary of your child’s behavior and graded assignments. You will need to sign and send back a form that will be attached to your child’s graded assignments. The reason we do this is so that we can all stay on top of owed work, grades, and behavior rather than waiting until progress report/report card time. Your cooperation is appreciated- we are a TEAM working together to insure success for your child(ren). Test Folders will come home on Tuesdays- please review, sign, and return green report notice on Wednesdays. You may keep graded assignments at home for future reference.
